Do you feel guilty? Do you struggle with saying ‘no’ because of the guilt that follows it? Do you hear the voice of guilt pushing you to do things you do not want to do?
Guilt is from the pit of hell and a lie from the enemy. We are justified by faith which means we are not guilty in Christ Jesus. (Romans 5:1)
Romans 8:1 says “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”
The Holy Spirit convicts us when we need to make a correction or when we sin. We are forgiven of our sins because Jesus bore them on the cross. Guilt is not from the Kingdom of God. Guilt lies and drives us to do things that we are not called to do.
When Jesus found out that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for 2 more days rather than rush to be with Lazarus and family. By the time Jesus got to Bethany to be with Mary and Martha, Lazarus was in the tomb for 4 days. (John 11).
John 11:5-6 says “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.” (emphasis mine)
Notice the word, ‘So’, in that passage? When ‘so‘ is used to join two thoughts, it means “therefore” or “for that reason”. Let’s rephrase this passage. “Jesus loved Martha’s family so “for that reason” He stayed where He was for 2 more days.
When Jesus did arrive on the scene both Mary and Martha told Him that if He had been there Lazarus would not have died. You can hear the voice of accusation in the midst of their grief.
To conclude the conversation with Mary and Martha, Jesus said: “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” (John 11:40)
Jesus could have gone to immediately to Lazarus, but He waited. Why? By waiting, He chose to let God receive the honor and glory in the situation.
How many times do we jump in to rescue people out of situations and not allow God to handle it?
How often does guilt drive us to play Junior Holy Spirit? By agreeing with the spirit of guilt we are putting our will above God’s will. We do not patiently wait, we jump in and rescue. We act so we can rid ourselves of that guilty feeling and feel justified by our own actions.
Guilt drives. Guilt steals your hope. Guilt tells you that a positive outcome is based on you or your actions. Guilt condemns. Guilt exhausts you. Guilt tells you that if you do not do something then nothing will get done. Guilt lies. Guilt partners with the Spirit of Accusation to accuse you of not doing enough or being enough.
Do you want to be free of guilt?
Thank you that we are justified and not guilty. Please show me areas of my life where guilt is my guide and not You. I trust You to do what You say You are going to do. Thank you for Jesus!
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
