What steals your hope?
Been watching the news? How about scrolling through social media posts? Are you ever tempted to start a discussion or share your opinions with others?
Regardless of your political or religious affiliation, social media makes it very apparent how divergent society’s views are and how unlikely we are to resolve them via social media. Strife, a violent conflict or dissension, is pervasive in our world.
Social media and news sources steal our hope, joy, and peace.
Proverbs 26:20-22 says
Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases. As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles, And they go down into the inmost body.
Does that sound like the current state of social media and news today? The Word of God is timeless and provides such eloquent descriptions of our world today.
Social media and news sources are fed by strife and contentions. People?s opinions are the wood that continually feeds the fire of news and gossip. Watching non-stop news videos can open the door to fear, insomnia, hopelessness or anger.
James 3:13-16 says
“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking (or strife) in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking (strife) exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” Emphasis mine.
Based on this passage in James, when wisdom does not descend from above it is:
When wisdom comes from above it is:
- Willing to yield
- Full of mercy and good fruits
- Without partiality
- Without hypocrisy
What does all this have to do with hope? Everything.
1 Peter 1:13 says ?Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.?
Are you girding up your mind and resting your hope in the revelation of Jesus Christ or are you letting social media or news steal your hope? Paul instructs us to not give place to the devil ( Ephesians 4:27 ) Don’t let Satan steal from you, guard your mind and heart. Protect your eyes and ears, pay attention to what you watch and read.
Meditate on Proverbs 4:20-27 today.
My son, give attention to my words;
Incline your ear to my sayings.
Do not let them depart from your eyes;
Keep them in the midst of your heart;
For they are life to those who find them,
And health to all their flesh.
Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.
Put away from you a deceitful mouth,
And put perverse lips far from you.
Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you.
Ponder the path of your feet,
And let all your ways be established.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil.
Jesus Christ is our living Hope and we can place our focus on Him. Focus on the wisdom from above and may the God of hope fill you with ALL joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
