I will. How many times have you said, “I will do this, I will do that, I will take care of this or I will handle that?”
Is your answer to most problems, “I will handle it, I will just take better care of myself or I will start tomorrow?”
While being a responsible adult does require a certain level of “I will do it, I will pay it or I will take care of it”, I believe we carry this self-sufficiency over to our emotional and spiritual lives.
In Isaiah 14:12-15, God talks about the ‘I wills’ of Lucifer. “For you have said in your heart: “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.” (emphasis mine)
When a problem or difficult situation arises do you say ‘I will handle it.” When a friend or family member does or says something against you, do you say “I will handle it.?” When there is an addiction crisis or an adulterous situation, do you say in your heart “I will handle it.?”
Many times I handled situations instead of relying on the Lord to be my defender. (Psalm 18:1-6) Many times I spoke words that I wish I had not. Many times I trusted in my solutions rather than God’s. Contrast this with Jesus’ response, “Not my will by yours be done.” (Matthew 26:39, Mark 14:36, Luke 22:42, John 6:38)
Is your hope in your ‘I will’ or His? I encourage you to meditate on James 1:2-7 today. Let patience in your situation complete its perfect work in you so that you will lack nothing. Put your faith in our Living Hope, Jesus Christ. Trust the Lord to defend you. Trust the Lord to answer your prayer. Trust the Lord.
“It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man”. (Psalm 118:8) (An interesting side note is that Psalm 118:8 is the scripture in the center of the bible.)
Lord thank you for all that You have done for me. Thank you for protecting and providing. Thank you for defending and preserving me. Show me where I have put my will over Yours. Today I lay down _________ and trust you to answer this prayer. I put my trust in You and not man.
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
